Art Center of Burlington

OUR MISSION

OUR MISSION

To use the power of art to awaken the creative nature that is in every person, to connect us socially and to contribute to the vibrancy of Burlington.

OUR VISION

The Art Center of Burlington believes the arts hold transformative potential for the individual and enhance the unique culture of our community. We strive to elevate the social culture of our community, to provide opportunities for creative expression, and to educate individuals in various forms of art.

Located in the heart of Downtown Burlington, the Art Center showcases one-of-a-kind artwork of local & regional artists with monthly Gallery exhibits & Artists Market. Children & adult art classes are offered along with unique events throughout the year. The Gallery Lounge offers the finest selection of wine, beer, & live music in a creative environment on the 1st & 3rd Friday of every month.

The Art Center of Burlington was founded in 1966 by a group of artists and friends with the first show at the Unitarian Church and eventually moving to its first home downstairs at the North Hill Medical Center. The very next year in 1967, the organization started the Father's Day tradition of Snake Alley Art Fair. Artists lined the alley with snow fence to hang their artwork for sale. Snake Alley Art Fair will be celebrating its 57th Anniversary on June 16, 2024.

The Art Center of Burlington is funded by memberships, as well as grants from John H. Witte Jr. Foundation, Harry & Virginia Murray Foundation, memorials, corporate sponsorships, private donations, and special fundraising events like the Snake Alley Art Fair.

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs officially designated Downtown Burlington as an Iowa Cultural & Entertainment District in Summer 2023.

This designation will have a positive impact on the quality of life and cultural vitality of Iowa, benefiting a significant number of individuals. By focusing on creating walkable, mixed-use spaces that serve as cultural anchors, the Iowa Cultural & Entertainment Districts program enriches our community and fosters a sense of civic pride. With 35 districts already recognized since the program's establishment in 2003, the state of Iowa continues to cultivate its cultural heritage and provide engaging experiences for residents and visitors alike.
